505 Wyong Mission Kokoda for MND

Story

The firefighters from 505 Wyong have some exciting news! In August 2023, our Captain Jamie Loader and five other firefighters are off to Papua New Guinea to take on a 10-day Kokoda Trek. We'll be traversing the route that our Aussie soldiers took and experiencing first-hand how difficult and challenging it must have been.

Whilst this challenge is about honouring the fallen heroes (both Australian and Papua New Guinean), we're also taking this opportunity to raise awareness and funds for a charity very dear to our hearts - Firies Climb for Motor Neuron Disease (MND). MND affects our nerves known as motor nerves, or motor neurons. In MND, these neurons degenerate and die. This causes the muscles to become weaker and weaker. This eventually leads to paralysis.

Every day in Australia, 2 people die and 2 people are diagnosed with MND. Tragically, the average life expectancy after diagnosis is just 27 months and 90% of cases have no obvious cause. We need research and answers into this debilitating disease.

FRNSW have a long history of raising funds for MND and 505 Wyong has a personal connection to this cause. DC Tim Farlow's stepdad, Ian, a long serving paramedic on the Coast, sadly lost his battle with MND in 2018. So, we're asking for your support in honouring him and all those who have battled this disease. Please click on the link below to make a tax-deductible donation and know that you're helping towards finding answers and maybe one day a cure for MND.
